THE TRAINER’S ADVICE ON THE STRENGTHENING OF BARAKA ARTISAN CAPACITIES IN MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING

As part of the training of the craftsmen of Baraka supported by the YOU Foundation in Germany and started since July 2017, we continue our series of interviews with the direct beneficiaries that are the artisans themselves. This time we went to meet the trainers to give us their impressions, their views on the behavior of craftsmen to the training.
Here are their reactions:

rps20170830_012354

M.SECK, Professor of Management and Marketing: « I am very pleased to be among the teachers of the artisans of Baraka and it is with great pleasure that I help these craftsmen because they are very motivated and courageous. Most of them are illiterate cause why courses are done in Wolof to enable them to better understand and participate. To evaluate them one does that orally because as you know their levels of education is very low and most do not know how to write so it is a difficulty and a constraint. But it is possible to manage by explaining through case studies, simulations until all participants are at the same level of understanding. The other difficulty is that there are many absences and cases of delay which according to the craftsmen is not easy for them as they combine work and capacity building sessions. But on the whole we can say that it is acceptable because they always manage to get by.  »

rps20170830_012241

M. KANE, Professor of General Informatics: « As my colleague MrSeck has said, it is with pleasure and love that we do our work. In general computing there are two, Mrs Sara DIÈNE and I, we divide the groups according to our timetables. I see that the craftsmen of Baraka are very courageous and I welcome this behavior because that is what will facilitate our work. In computer science, the practice is more important than the theory and this I explained well to the craftsmen. We have a heterogeneous group composed of those who have little notion in computer science and those who do not have it so I am obliged to put them on the same level. We also noticed that it is the young boys who are most involved in computers compared to women. But among women, there are also those who have a capacity for understanding faster than others, so it is for us to assist them more so that they are at a certain level.  Overall, the group follows the courses well and on a regular basis.  »

rps20170830_012310

Mr Diouf, Professor of Management Informatics  » It is with pleasure that I am practicing this trade in Baraka. Craftsmen are courageous and ambitious because it is not easy for them to combine work and these capacity building sessions. Many of them have no concept in management, so we try to separate them into two groups to better work in coherence. All courses are in Wolof to help them better understand and evaluate them orally. The only difficulty we face is delays and absences. Sometimes we are obliged to organize remedial sessions or they disrupt the course by questions that we have already overcome. If not all in all we can say that the sessions are going well and the craftsmen of Baraka are really brave and patient. «

VISIT OF THE DELEGATION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION TO SENEGAL IN BARAKA

On the occasion of her visit to Senegal from 22 to 29 April 2017, Ambassador Ohoven and Mrs Claudia Jerger paid a courtesy visit to the European Union delegation in Senegal on 27 April 2017. This visit to the delegation of The European Union enters into the framework of sensitizing potential partners in Senegal to accompany and support the project « Cité Baraka » initiated by the YOU Foundation and its partners as well as beneficiary populations.

At the end of this visit, and on the suggestion of Mrs Jerger of the YOU Foundation, Mr Clemens SCHROETER, Team Leader, ECONOMY AND SOCIAL SECTIONS, Hugo VAN TILBORG, Team Leader, SECTION INFRASTRUCTURES, Delegation of The European Union in Senegal visited Baraka.

The visit finally took place on 3rd May 2017 and the delegation was welcomed to Baraka by the team of HOPE’87 in Senegal and the members of the steering committee of the Baraka district.

A courtesy visit was made to the neighborhood head and the imam before touring the neighborhood.

A brief presentation of the neighborhood was made (how the people live) and what will the neighborhood be in the future with the project « Cité Baraka » by the HOPE’87 team.

The visit was guided by members of the steering committee in connection with the HOPE’87 team and all the infrastructures were visited. These include the primary school which has been completely renovated and formalized thanks to the YOU-Fondation, the hairdressing salon for the accompaniment of young girls, the IT center to facilitate young people’s access to New Technologies Information and Communication.

Questions were asked by the visitors on the way of life of the populations of Baraka and what they expect from the new city Baraka as summed up on the board.

In the reply, the neighborhood chief and chairman of the Baraka district steering committee said: « Since the beginning of his intervention in 2005, we have asked the YOU-Foundation to get us out of the precarious situation in which we live. It was after 12 years of fighting that our blond mum was able to find a partner and that is why we arrived at this result. We also attended all the stages of the project until the ceremony to launch the work by the President of the Republic of Senegal who supports this project.

According to Clemens SCHROETER, Mrs Jerger gave them a presentation of the project and they came to visit the site in Baraka as promised to Mrs. Jerger. Their structure can do nothing for the moment in Baraka because all their projects are running but that in the future it could be that it does something.

The head of district and all the members present at the visit welcomed this initiative of the YOU-Foundation, which consists in inviting all the development partners intervening in Senegal to get involved in the « Cité Baraka » project.

As well as thanking the guests for their visit to Baraka, the neighborhood chief and the notables present also prayed for the YOU-Foundation and its partners to make this project possible for the benefit and happiness of the people of Baraka.
